Signed by Brian Carey as relegation seemed likely at the end of the 2006-7 season, Williams' organisational abilities helped to sort the defence out and, keeping five clean sheets and conceding just five goals in his nine games, he played a big part in fending off the drop.

The 2007-8 season started less well, most nitably when his collision with Richard Hope in an F.A. Cup tie at Peterborough made them both figures of fun on "Match of the Day".  Although he fought back to regain his place after Michael Jones had displaced him, he was replaced by Gavin Ward soon after Brian Little's arrival.
