A speedy right back, the arrival of Obeng in 2009 appeared to bear out Dean Saunders' assertion that, as the Summer wore on, better quality players would be forced to set their sights lower as they looked for a club.

Obeng's pedigree is certainly impressive. An England Under-19 international and FA Youth Cup runner-up, he left Manchester City as there was clearly no way through to a senior side packed with expensive signings.

Trials with Wigan Athletic and Blackpool failed to provide him with a new club though, and when Saunders used his connections at Manchester City to approach Obeng he was successful.

He enjoyed an impressive start to his career at The Racecourse, his raw pace allowing him to be utilised not only in defence, but also as a right-sided midfielder. Indeed, he earned a call-up to the England C squad, but as the campaign wore on Obeng struggled to adapt, losing his place to Silvio Spann and coming in for criticism of his decision-making by his manager.

However, Obeng did end the season with some recognition, as he was called up to the England C team, earning 2 caps.

He began the 2010-11 season in a situation he could hardly have anticipated a year earlier when he signed a two-year contract, as he found himself playing second fiddle to young Declan Walker, who made his debut on the last day of the previous season. The ability of new signing Chris Blackburn to play on the right also added to the competition to his place.

However, Obeng responded to the challenge with a much better campaign, making the right back spot his own as the season progressed as his defensive play developed and he provided a succession of assists, sometimes with his long throws but also with his improved crossing ability, most notably illustrated by his cross for Andy Morrell against ?????

He also got his first career goal, albeit in very fortunate circumstances in the last home game of the season when a cross found its way in past Tamworth’s shaky goalkeeper!

It was a major coup for Saunders in the Summer of 2011 when, despite interest from Football League clubs, Obeng decided to sign a new contract for Wrexham, and he maintained his excellent form. A mainstay of the side’s promotion push in 2011, in the 2012 transfer window he sealed a move to Preniership Swansea City following a starring role in Wrexham’s cup tie with Brighton.
