Ashton was already known to Wrexham fans for his exploits with the club’s two major rivals. He established himself at Shrewsbury and then moved on to Chester, where he suffered a year of frustration in the 2009-10 season as the club collapsed; as a result all his appearances in that campaign were expunged.
An intense character who doesn’t take defeat lightly, Ashton immediately endeared himself to the Racecourse faithful, although he did suffer early disappointment when he was sent off for a professional foul in the Welsh derby at Newport.
Apart from a few matches missed in the middle of the season through injury, Ashton was a regular at left back throughout the campaign, impressing with his solid defending and ability to get forwards and deliver telling crosses
