A combative midfield play-maker with the ability to pass short or long, Keates' arrival at The Racecourse was a poorly-kept secret in the summer of 2010, but still raised a few eyebrows when it was confirmed. Having played a key role in two successive promotions for Peterborough between 2008 and 2009, and played in The Championship the previous season, it seemed peculiar that a player of such ability and experience would choose to continue his career at Conference level.

An energetic midfielder who often caught the eye with his performances against Wrexham, particularly for Walsall, for whom he scored a spectacular goal past The Dragons in 2002, his leadership qualities and ability to supply Wrexham's strikers with the opportunities that were lacking in 2009-10 season were be crucial.

Keates’ early games showed just what a fine signing he was. Immediately made captain by Saunders, his leadership was obvious as his play-making and ability to hit a free kick from distance confirmed his importance to the team. He even scored what most fans would agree was the goal of the season, a superb volley against Kidderminster.

Keates maintained that form throughout the campaign, leading by example and showing great energy in the middle of the field, even though he was hampered in the second half of the season by a niggling injury.

His fitness was also a concern at the start of the following season, although he earned even more respect from Wrexham’s fans for the commitment he showed in the face of one particular knock, coming out of the changing room to play with a broken collar bone against Newport County, his arm strapped to his side, because the side had used all its substitutes!
