Miscellaneous Two seasons ago Wrexham beat 3-1 in Saunders’ first home match as manager.
York’s first match at The Racecourse was exactly eighty-one years ago! It ended in a 1-1 draw.
If Wrexham are to start pushing on towards the lofty league position Dean Saunders feels they should be occupying, they need to start winning home games, and a visit from one of their promotion rivals seems as good a place to start as any.
York have been defeated both times they’ve played at The Racecourse in The Conference, and will arrive level on points with their hosts. They’ll provide a robust physical challenge for a Wrexham side whose make-up is the subject of some uncertainty.
There would appear to be two key issues confronting Saunders: one concerns the balance of the team, the other the make-up of his back four.
The first issue is a question of how flexible he feels the current shape of the team is. I’ve been raving about the formation he played at Bath and Newport, where Christian Smith sitting in front of the back four has allowed Wrexham to dominate possession and exert a great deal of control, even when down to ten men. The question is whether Saunders sees that set-up as ideal for away games, where the opposition must first be contained, or whether he’s willing to play the same formation at home.
Saunders is likely to keep faith with the midfield which has served him well; the thing to watch out for is whether Smith’s positional discipline gives Keates and Harris scope to get high up the pitch and cause problems for York. Alternatively, Saunders could use Brown in the hole, and York’s usual 4-4-2 might make them ripe to be exploited by a player in that position.
At the back, Saunders’ hand could be forced by the availability of Marvin Andrews. If he can play, there’s a good chance Saunders will replace the suspended Neil Ashton with Frank Sinclair, rather than give young Johnny Hunt his first home start.
On the other flank, Curtis Obeng was shaky at Newport, but might well hold onto his position, especially if Andrews’ injury means Sinclair has to stay in the middle and Hunt plays, as Saunders might be reluctant to play both his inexperienced full backs in the same line-up.
York’s conundrum, interestingly, lies in deciding who will play against Wrexham’s back four, and there could be some interesting second-guessing going on before Martin Foyle decides who to plump for.
There has been some speculation that he might change to a 4-3-3, but keeping his 4-4-2 seems a more likely option. In that case, Foyle has to decide whether to stick with Michael Rankine and Michael Gash up front, a combination which had little chance to play together as Richard Brodie was irreplaceable up front, or give Leon Constantine a first start in four months despite being short of match fitness.

Miscellaneous: Wrexham's 3-1 win in October 2008 was Dean Saunders' first home game as Wrexham manager.
Constantine looks like a good option, not only because he enjoyed a remarkable debut last Saturday-fresh from being drafted in to replace Brodie he came off the bench to score one and set one up-but because by all accounts there was little chemistry between Rankine and Gash before Constantine replaced the latter.
Might Foyle gamble on who Saunders picks at the back? Constantine and Rankine are both big physical players, and if Andrews doesn’t make it, they might be able to rough up a fairly small back four. However, Gash is a key link player, able to drop into that “David Brown” position to prompt, and might well get the nod.
Foyle also has decisions to make about his back four. Centre back Djoumin Sangare is out injured, so Daniel Parslow, usually a centre back but right back in each game so far this season, might shift back inside, allowing Duane Courtneney, who seemed to imply to the York Press this week that he was a target of Dean Saunders in the Summer, a first start for York.
