Having arrived on trial at The Racecourse in the Summer of 2011, Clarke might have feared the worst. With problems behind the scenes the squad was unable to fulfil some of its scheduled friendlies and saw its training schedule interrupted. However, Dean Saunders saw enough of the versatile midfielder to offer him a shot at forging a career with Wrexham by signing him on non-contract terms.

The Midlander enjoyed a dramatic rise up the divisions a year earlier. He had been playing for Redditch United until then, but was given the chance to play one division higher when he signed for Conference North side Solihull Moors. However, before he had a chance to play a competitive game for them he caught the eye of Darlington, who signed him the day before the season began.

However, his dream move didn’t last for long. Although he was a regular part of the team at the start of the season he fell out of favour-ironically his final match for them was a half time substitute appearance.in a 1-0 home defeat to Wrexham-and he was released from his contract in February.

Clarke’s chances diminished under Saunders, especially once Dean Keates returned to fitness, but under new boss Andy Morrell he was given his opportunity and did well as a tidy holding midfielder, able to recirculate the ball efficiently and shoot from outside the area, as he showed with a fine strike in a win away to table topping Gateshead!
